Weird World of Vasilis

We found this amazing young artist in Bonn, Germany, to where he had emigrated from his hometown of Athens, Greece, where he was part of the independent comics scene.

Vasilis found work as an illustrator and animator in Germany and self-published his own magazine: BARGAL.

His artwork brings to mind comics creators like Charles Burnes or Geoff Darrow, but Vasilis follows his own weird agenda:

Stories about crime, angst and loss. Vasilis says he likes the quiet and the nature of his German exile – but comes the night, he gets swept away in weirdness!

Do you find it easy to consider a page finished and not to keep tweaking it endlessly?

Before BARGAL, I made the mistake of getting too lost in details.
When you work digitally like I do, you can zoom in and work more and more intricately. Then you get lost.

Ah, so when does Geoff Darrow stop working on his insanely detailed panels?

By drawinig traditionally on paper, I kid you not. Nothing digital. If you can’t zoom in on your artwork, then you only draw details that show up on a page.

That’s crazy.

Digital zooming is really where the danger lies. On paper you know: This is the space I have, I can fill it, but I can’t zoom it again to gain more space.

But you’re committed to digital drawing?

I admire people who draw on paper. I also did this in art school, but I was always afraid of making mistakes. So you can’t let go artistically, but that’s important. With digital drawing, you can undo any mistake.
I also got lost in the preliminary drawing and didn’t want to go to the inking.

With the computer everything is no problem, I can let go more and more and open up to my art.
Not every line has to be perfect, it just has to work as a whole.

The sum of all the lines creates perfection, not the individual line.

What’s going on in the Greek comics scene? We don’t hear about it here.

There are plenty of Greek comic artists, by the way, not only in Athens. Thessaloniki has a lively scene, and it’s growing. Furthermore, more and more festivals are sprouting up.

Do they all work for the Greek market?

Hell no, there’s Dani, who draws THE LOW LOW WOODS for DC; Michael Dialynas, who works for Boom Studios, illustrated TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES for a while; Nikos Koutsis draws and colors for Image … there are some talents from Greece working for the American comics industry.
